Grinchen er en ondsindet, grøn, behåret skabning som bor i en kold hule oppe på toppen af bjerget Crumpit. Grinchens hjerte er to størrelser for lille, og de to ting han hader mest i verden, er jul og beboerne i Hvemstrup ved foden af hans bjerg. Et år beslutter han sig for at sætte en stopper for julen en gang for alle og stjæler alle gaverne og julepynten mens byen sover juleaften. Men beboerne i Hvemstrup fejrer alligevel jul, og ved hjælp fra den lille pige Cindy Lou forstår Grinchen endelig at julens sande ånd stikker dybere end glitterstads og legetøj.
