Adrian Monk a San Franciscó-i rendőrség kiváló nyomozója volt. Azonban egyik bűnügye kapcsán a felesége egy autóba rejtett pokolgép miatt meghalt. Monk a történtekért önmagát hibáztatta, sohasem tudott magának megbocsátani. Gyerekkorától fennálló fóbiás és kényszeres magatartása csak fokozódott, még a lakását sem hagyta el három éven keresztül. A rendőrségtől furcsa viselkedése miatt elbocsátották, de külsős civil konzultánsként továbbra is segíti a rendőrökség munkáját és elég hatékonyan működik közre a bűnügyek megoldásában.
