Kapitein Steve Jarvis en Luitenant Joe Rossi zijn officieren op een tanker als hun schip tot zinken wordt gebracht door een Duitse onderzeeboot. Na enige tijd krijgen ze de leiding over een vrachtschip dat van Halifax naar Moermansk moet varen. Ze maken deel uit van een groot internationaal konvooi dat goederen brengt naar Europa. Als het konvooi wordt aangevallen door Duitse onderzeeboten, worden ze van het konvooi afgezonderd. Op eigen kracht vervolgen ze hun reis achterna gezeten door een Duitse onderzeeboot, het begin van een kat- en muisspel waarin de slimste zal overleven.
