subransuting506 By Gruszki: The challenge here was the cozy culture vocabulary and concepts in connection with Christmas traditions and other word play which isn't really translatable. For example throughout the film there is a play on the word "pinne" which means both stick and branch, twig, limb (of a tree). BUT, it is also used in pinnekjøtt, meaning lamb spareribs which is THE main Christmas Eve dinner item in virtually every Norwegian home. This knowledge is necessary in order to understand what's happening when Lillebror freaks out and runs from the farmer who is offering him a gift of pinnekjøtt. Then there is the bankekjøtt which is the term Norwegians have for the English concept of pressed ham, usually eaten on bread. When Filip tells Lillebror to come out of his locked room to get some bankekjøtt for breakfast, he's pounding on his door at the same time. In Norwegian, banke is also used for pounding on a door and for beating somebody up. Then there is the julebukk, a Scandinavian-wide tradition of going from door to door to get treats on Christmas Eve, much like Halloween, only without the tricks. It usually is done by kids or teenagers and they usually sing carols when the host opens the door.
